5 out of 5 stars The "Do Everything" Shoe   March 10, 2010
Patrick R. Weston (Seattle, WA USA)
I have to admit the first time I saw my old roommate with these shoes that he'd gone and lost his mind, but curiosity got the better of me and several months later I bought my own pair. Since purchasing my Five Fingers I have done everything from swimming to yoga, to weight training to running and true to their word my legs and lower back have gotten stronger and my posture has improved! I highly recommend these shoes to anyone who lives an active lifestyle with a variety of interests. As a single man they also make a great conversation starter at the beach!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic product, buy elsewhere   March 8, 2010

These are great running shoes. As has been said elsewhere, once you get used to them the odds are good that your nagging injuries will not be as immediate. That said, the vendor has doubled the price of the shoes. Get them elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great for CrossFit   March 7, 2010
Jay (San Diego, CA)
Perfect for anyone who does Crossfit. These shoes help create a much more stable base for olympic lifts than regular running/cross-training shoes. Also, with there being no heel you are able to squat much deeper than with shoes with a big heel. Make sure you follow the insturctions on the company's website for sizing. I have ran in these too, just start out slow and with short distances before working yourself up to your normal pace and longer distances.

4 out of 5 stars Pros and cons   February 9, 2010

Overall I'm really happy with the shoe. It's about time somebody did something like this. Nature has been developing the foot for several million years. Nike comes along and the first thing they do is put the foot in a cast. This shoe fits like a glove and allows the foot to work the way it was designed to work. I run trails through the woods in the Pacific Northwest. The trails are full of roots. In a conventional shoe, I was always tripping. In this shoe, your toes bend if you hit a root. Much less likely to fall. And it feels good to feel the ground underneath your foot. You can make all of these subtle little adjustments to your stride with each step. It's definitely the wave of the future in my opinion.

I have one major complaint with the shoe. Look at the picture. The shoe is designed for people with flat feet. The shoe's flat. If you have a high arch as I do, you have to buy a size too big in order to even get the shoe on. Even then it takes five minutes to get the shoes on. The first pair I bought I couldn't get it on at all and I had to return for a larger size. The fit is less than ideal.

There is a reason nature designed the foot with an arch. It's to spread the load. Do you want to work with nature or not? It's a paradox to me that the arch was ignored by the company that designed this shoe. Maybe most people have flat feet, I don't know. At a minimum, there needs to be two versions of this shoe. One for people with flat feet and one for people who have retained an arch.

5 out of 5 stars Fun! Yes, Fun!   February 6, 2010

First, I love my Vibrams - I even named them Runabout and Wanderlust. If you don't know much about the barefoot running movement, google the Nike Stanford study. Fascinating, isn't it?

Most of the other reviewers omitted one of the most important things about these shoes: They make running fun. Fun like when you were four years old and running like crazy monkey child. Fun because they weigh almost nothing, your gait changes to quicker shorter strides, and you have the sudden urge to jump on logs and run though dirt trails. It's because you can actually feel your toes grip the ground.

Also, they are versatile; I've used mine kayaking, paddle boarding, climbing, running, and as boat shoes. They were originally designed to be boat shoes for races; the soles are incredibly thin but offer unbeatable traction.

Certain sellers are grossly overpricing their Vibrams; you should be able to find them for $80-90. I bought my pair for about $75 and got a second pair for my wife half off.

Edit: One thing I missed when first writing this is when choosing a pair of FiveFingers, I recommend one that have mesh covering the foot There are two styles, the ones which cover your foot and a lower cut that only covers the toes and some of the foot - these are still good, but may allow dirt and pebbles in while running on trails.
